What will break down denial?

The news of the massive ice shelf collapse in Antarctica is very worrying - the consensus process of the UN science panel the IPCC didn't project that kind of event in this timeframe....they spoke of sea level rise in increments over a century but all the indicators are speeding up - its happening so much faster than even the worse case scenarios in the last IPCC report.

I wonder what part of global warming do we not as a species understand. Are we in some kind of collective denial because we don't want to deal with our addictions? I am reminded of two images - the proverbial ostrich with its head in the sand and of a person with lung cancer who goes out and buys a few more cartons of ciggies because they are on special at the supermarket. What can trigger a collapse of mass community denial? Any ideas?

I like the idea that all things are possible but probably not until we realise that everything is at stake and I for one don't want to wait until then!.

when people can see the forest for the dollars(trees) then change will be made, we are too addicted to our distructive lifestyle to make changes for the good of the planet, maybe it needs to become legislation to become effective??
